Consensus estimate
The average of what analysts expect for revenue or profit.
Before each release, many banks and research firms estimate how much a company will earn. The average of those estimates is the consensus.
The price often already reflects that expectation. A share can therefore fall despite record profit if the consensus was even higher, and rise despite a loss if everyone expected worse. DipCatcher shows the EPS consensus ahead of the next results.
