Sector
The industry a company operates in, such as technology or healthcare.
Companies are grouped into sectors by what they do, for example technology, healthcare, financials, energy or consumer goods. Shares in the same sector often move together because the same things affect them, such as interest rates, commodity prices or new rules.
Comparing with the sector helps explain a drop: if only one share falls, the cause is more likely the company; if the whole sector falls, more likely the environment. DipCatcher shows this comparison under "Why is the price falling?".
