Free cash flow
The cash actually left after running the business and investing.
Free cash flow is the cash coming in from operations minus investment, for example in machinery or buildings. It shows how much real money a company has for dividends, share buybacks or paying down debt.
Unlike accounting profit, it is hard to dress up. A company that keeps reporting profit but takes in no cash deserves a closer look.
